zonealarm firewall

every version of the zonealarm free firewall i have tried, from the latest version to version 4.5.594 shuts down my computer completely, and by that i mean that with my aol dial up connection i cant download files with download accelerator plus (the download stops as soon as i activate the firewall and starts again when i shutdown the firewall), and web pages wont load (i get an error message) and my aol dialup connection shuts down. i have allowed these programs in the firewall but that does not help. does anybody know how to stop zonealarm from shutting down my computer completly so that i can use it or is there another version of zonealarm that i can download that will not do this? thanks

If you are connecting primarily through AOL dial-up, you really have no reason to use a software firewall. You are already connecting through the AOL server, which gives you inherent security. Firewalls are primarily for "always on" connections, such as cable or DSL.

If you're running AOL 5 you will have to add the IP ranges of AOL DNS servers into ZA's zones. You can get this by writing down the IP # blocked by ZA and go to WHOIS to get the range. Whois is here: http://www.kloth.net/services/whois.php . When I was running AOL 5 I had to put 4 different ranges in to connect to the internet. If you're not running version 5 I don't know why this is happening. Does ZA show a specific IP it blocks when you try to go to a website.

ZA has it's own forums, you may want to check there:
