Dell XPS 8930 with Corsair Vengeance LPS Memory

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 8930 i5 gen 9, it came with 16GB memory but I wanted to upgrade to 64GB and bought the corsair vengeance kit (CMK64GX4M4A2666C16). when I install it I get the chips, either as a pair or all four, I get the blinking four amber lights on the power button.

I've tried removing the CMOS battery for 60 seconds etc, but not getting any headway.

Thanks

I suggest you read this thread: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/My-XPS-8930-can-t-upgrade-to-64GB-RAM/m-p/7660557#M52448

Four blinking amber lights mean memory or RAM failure. It is possible that the new memory is not compatible. You could try each module separately. I recommend you try crucial.com, they guarantee compatibility.

I also wanted to point out that the specs of your Corsair memory indicate an SPD Speed of 2133 MHz. The XPS 8930 does not use the XMP 2.0 profile so your speed will be limited to 2133 MHz. If you want to operate at 2666 MHz make sure the memory you purchase has an SPD Speed of at least 2666 MHz.

this was on the corsair site as compatible so not sure why its being rejected, I'll try a single chip at a time and see what happens.

Like I wrote, even if you get it to work the XPS 8930 does not utilize the XMP 2.0 so you be stuck at 2133 MHz.

@bobsa    I'll try a single chip at a time and see what happens.

What is your pc usage regime where you would need 64GB of RAM for a 6 core processor that does not support Hyper-Threading technology?

Hi,

I Run a VMware and Hyper-V cluster on some servers and sometimes move a number of servers to my desktop for local offline or sandbox work.

@bobsa I went to the Corsair site and put in the Dell XPS 8930 and now it does not show any 64GB memory kits. I filtered the results by speed, 2133MHz - 2400MHz and 2666MHz - 2800MHz. Perhaps I am doing something wrong.
