XPS 8910, Need Memory

My XPS 8910 has 1 slot used with 16 GB DDR4 2133. The only upgrades listed for my computer are the 4 and 8GB of this...

Manufacturer part SNPFN6XKC/8G
Dell part A8058238

Where can I get another 16GB stick, does Dell not sell the ones they install, does the system support 2 16GB sticks and can I mix MFR?

This is what HWiNFO says I have:

RAM = SK Hynix HMA82GU6MFR8N-TF

DDR4-2134 PC17000 SDRAM UDIMM

ECC = N

16GB 1067MHZ

Single Channel CR=2T tRFC=374

Timings 15 15 15 36

Yes the system supports 2 16 GB sticks and you can mix MFR. I should know because I did it. Ignore Table 2 in the Service Manual, it is incomplete and wrong (it doesn't even list a configuration with a single memory module). I have the same exact memory (manufactured by Sk Hynix) in my XPS 8910 from Costco. A single 16 GB memory module operating in single channel mode. What I did was I brought a Crucial 16 GB memory module and now I have 32 GB operating in dual channel. The Crucial module I brought (from Newegg) is Crucial 16 GB Single DDR4-2133 MT/s (PC4-17000) DIMM 288-Pin Memory - CT16G4DFD8213.

HWiNFO64 says:

Current Memory Clock: 1064.3 MHz

Current Timing: 15-15-15-36

Memory Runs At: Dual-Channel

Module Manufacturer: Crucial Technology

Module Part Number: CT16G4DFD8213.C16F

The original memory module is in slot XMM1 and the new module is in slot XMM2. Slots on the motherboard are labeled XMM3, XMM1, XMM4, & XMM2 from left to right. XMM1 and XMM2 have white-colored securing clips. Hope this helps.

One reason I brought this memory from Newegg was the user reviews said it worked in the XPS 8910.

Wow! Thanks so much. I was wondering as It looked like it didn't offer a 2x16GB option. That's great news and thanks very much for the part number and instructions and verifying the HWinfo stuff too.

Darn it seems to be out of stock. I'll check around though.

I am glad to help. Seems to be in stock at Newegg, but not sold and shipped by them. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820156117. Newegg does say a newer version (CT16G4DFD824A) is available and is cheaper.

I am not sure why crucial.com doesn't have this memory, it maybe that faster memory has superseded it. This document even lists a UPC: http://www.crucial.com/wcsstore/CrucialSAS/pdf/product-flyer/ram/crucial-ddr4-desktop-en-a4.pdf

I have G.SKILL Aegis 64GB (4 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 and no problems. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-232-246

The new part number had a CL17 instead of 15, is that what I need to match? I did find your part number on Amazon though, so its probably still available.

Hey thanks, that's even cheaper. It has a CL15 also, I'm guessing that's going to be what I need. Its been along time since I shopped for ram, so I'm out of practice on all the numbers.

Do you know of any reason why I can't upgrade my factory 8GB (2x4GB) memory in my XPS 8910 to 16 GB by adding 2 compatible Crucial 4GB sticks?  I'd prefer not to have to throw out the original two and go to 2x8GB.

There is no reason you cannot do it. In my opinion, the Memory configuration matrix in the XPS 8910 service manual does not show all possible memory configurations. My XPS 8910 came with 16 GB in a single memory module, a configuration that is one of those that is not in the matrix. If you use the Crucial memory selection tool the memory it selects is guaranteed to work.

If you can afford it and you think that a some point you may need more than 16 GB of memory you should consider adding 2x8GB for a total of 24 GB, because needing more memory later will mean throwing out 2x4GB.

Is there any reason why the IPSKL-VM motherboard won't take 64GB of memory?  I have four 16GB modules, but the system doesn't get to the splash screen when all four are installed at the same time.  Yet, when I replace one of the 16GB modules with an 8GB module it starts fine and reads 56GB as installed.

I updated the BIOS before the memory upgrade.

I also moved the memory around in the 4 slots looking to see if the motherboard had a bad slot. Regardless of where the 48 or 56GB of memory installed, the BIOS will recognize the correct amount of memory and it doesn't seem to matter where the 8GB module resides.

Does anyone have any ideas on why the motherboard won't recognize all 64GB?

THANKS!!

I don't know why you have this problem but it is interesting that your problem is similar to the problem described in this post about an XPS 8900: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/XPS-8900-won-t-accept-64GB-RAM-only-up-to-56GB/m-p/7342058#M25814

Thank you for your advice.

Facing the same situation and following your advice, I purchased a 16 GB module from AmazonSmile: Crucial RAM 16GB DDR4 2400 MHz CL17 Desktop Memory CT16G4DFD824A : Everything Else a few months ago and I am happy to report that the system is working flawlessly.

@Vic384All the info you provided are so helpful.  My 8910 has the same 16GB memory (SK Hynix - HMA82GU6MFR8N-TF) as yours.  I would like to get 3 more 16GB sticks for upgrade.

My struggle now is crucial.com only sells 16GB DDR4-2400.  They suggested me to buy a kit part (2 x 16GB) and a single 16GB, however they do not know if they are single or dual rank until I have received them and share the part# with them.  16GB DDR4-2133 can be found on Newegg and they even have 4x16GB kit part available (https://www.newegg.com/crucial-64gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820156089?Item=9SIB60MGRG1383).  I am wondering if I should get one 2x16 GB kit part and one single 16GB to work with the existing memory module as Crucial suggested or I should get the 4x16GB and take the existing out. I also found SK Hynix - HMA82GU6MFR8N-TF available on Amazon and wonder if I should just get 3 of them.  Crucial gives full refund on returns and Newegg charges 15% on returns.  Amazon also may charges fee on this return.  Any suggestions?  Thank you in advance for your help!

@charixma I found the exact Crucial memory I used on Newegg: https://www.newegg.com/crucial-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820156117?Description=ct16g4dfd8213&cm_re=ct16g4dfd8213-_-20-156-117-_-Product&quicklink=true

The memory is $64 ($46 less expensive than I paid in 2017). The memory is sold by a third party on Newegg and it is dual rank according to CPU-Z just like the SK Hynix.

At crucial.com the single 16 GB DDR4-2400 appears to be dual rank (it says 2Rx8). If you really need 64 GB of memory I would go with crucial.com (2x16 GB kit + 1 x 16 GB) because they guarantee capability although it will cost a little more. Crucial does reserve the right to charge a restocking fee (up to 20%) at their discretion. Newegg and Amazon memory you are looking at are sold by third parties. The cost difference between the options Crucial and Amazon is about $29 and Crucial's warranty is the best, I would not buy a 4x16 GB kit and take the existing SK Hynix memory out.
