XPS 8700, GTX 1660 6GB, GPU upgrade

I've read about a few upgrades done and shared here and now trying something I'll report back on. I bought MSI GTX 1660, 6GB DDR5 192 bit I ordered the 128 bit but this is what was sent. The PSU required is 450 so that's ok, I'm concerned about the 192-bit bus. I need to order a Dual 6pin to 8 pin adapter then will give it a try. If, if this works this 5-year-old dell will be kicking?. I'll report back tomorrow. this is just for FYI,

Update: Installed the card works great easy install just needed a duel 6 to 8 pin to convert power cable. Benchmarks are surprising for this XPS8700 However 2 days later while pushing the Graphics it started to Reboot. I ran System diags in a 20 min loop and all is well till I push the GPU to its limits. So I'm currently debugging this. Thinking maybe the PSU 460W has too many devices drawing current, the GPU needs 450W. I have a USB bank of 6 Flash drives need to disconnect then push GPU, I'll be back.

Update: I run the system through a 2-hour diagnostic test then the Video separate with no problems. Maybe it was simply not seated well. I have no problems now for about 10 days I guess. So, in Summary, the upgrade works! I'm adding an AX WiFi6 card today and a New Router RAX 80 NetGear nighthawk.

Umm...it's a violation of the forum's Terms of Use to use character substitutions in a word that would otherwise have been censored.

I was looking at my XPS 8700’s motherboard specs and the GTX 1660 specs, and decided it looks like it should work. Then I decided to Google and found your post. Now I know it will work.
Thank you for sharing!

video AUX power.

splitters are ok on your low power card, 120w,

but not my 300 watt card. I need at least 4 yellow wires, end to end no splitter allowed.

run FURMARK , to test 3D full load,  then know if the PC BSODS or overheats, if yes, we fix that next.

doing desktop work means nothing with that  card. 2d is nothing.

Could you help me? I just bought a GALAX GTX 1660 for my XPS 8700 and now my system is rebooting, what did you do to fix it?

@mag_vinicius  -

  • Always mention version of Windows in your posts.
  • When is it "rebooting"? While it's running or is it just rebooting over/over when you first turn it on?
  • Did you try clearing BIOS?
  • Did you disable Secure Boot in BIOS setup?
  • Did you load the Galaxy driver(s)?

Hello, I was just wondering if you had to upgrade your PSU after all?  I have just done the same GPU upgrade to an MSI gtx 1660 Ventus and my PC is crashing under graphical load.  Do you have any update? Thanks! @Gesteiger1

Hello there!

If this problem still actually:

In nvidia gpu driver options, to select the max performance. It helped me with GTX 1660 ti. Information from this post , but not need max performance on windows power settings, only gpu settings.

Hello! What yours TDP on GTX 1660? If it's 150 WT, 6 pin mother to 8 pin father - it's cable you need with a standard power supply. And all be fine.
