XPS 8700, SSD upgrade
Hi , I was wondering if you guys could help me figuring out if this ssd can work with my XPS 8700, (Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe 250GB Internal SSD (MZ-V7E250BW) [Canada Version] )
here's the link : https://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-970-EVO-250GB-MZ-V7E250BW/dp/B07BN5FJZQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1550987338&sr=8-2&keywords=samsung+pro+970
Or I could buy an ssd like this type : link: https://www.amazon.ca/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0764WCXCV/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=samsung%2Bssd&qid=1551484752&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&th=1
But I will need to buy a mounting bracket and a SATA cable..
So my question is basically : Can a ssd like the Samsung 970 fit in my motherboard or should I buy an ssd like the other type? PS: I have a GTX 1050 Ti , I don't know if it's a problem..
Thank you, Dave.

The Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe will not work. According to the XPS 8700 specs it supports mSATA (mini-SATA) and the Samsung is NVMe. You can use a 2.5" SSD like the MX500 but like you said you will need a mounting bracket and a SATA cable.

You will not likely need a power cable; usually there are extra power connectors available since the computer can support more than one hard drive. I would open the case and look around. You may also want to get familiar with the owner's manual: https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_xps_desktop/xps-8700_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf

Technically, with a PCIe 4x-to-M.2 adapter card (like this one https://www.amazon.com/Mailiya-M-2-PCIe-3-0-Adapter/dp/B01N78XZCH/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=pci+2.0+m.2+adapter&qid=1551998809&s=gateway&sr=8-4), you can install an M.2 drive into your xps 8700, but it's not recommended, since the available PCIe slot is X1, not X4. The adapter maker claims it's compatible with PCI 2.0 motherboards. But, from what I've read, the 8700 has a 4x X1 slot, if that makes any sense, so it's actually SLOWER than just using an mSATA or SATA III drive.
I'd get the 2nd choice you listed. Don't buy an M.2 for the 8700. p.s. if you want to mirror your boot drive, buy a USB 3.0-to-2.5" SATA3 cable, so you can copy everything on your old HDD to your new SDD.

Hello
I have installed a Samsung 860 EVO mSATA in the mSATA slot on my Dell XPS 8700 motherboard. It is 1TB just like my hard drive.
How do I get my computer to boot from this drive?
If this is not possible then how do I get it to accelerate disk access from the hard drive?
Thanks
Kevin

No NVMe card will work, I have a Samsung SSD 860 EVO M2 2TB on an adapter M2 to mSATA (EBAY) working fine behind an ASUS GEFORCE GTX 1650 SUPER.

Some replies below mention a Samsung 860 mSata drive as a replacement for the existing motherboard mounted drive. I have not been able to locate any of these drives as they are out of stock. I have found success with the 1tb mSata drive from Dogfish as a replacement for my old 256 gb drive on the motherboard. I also ordered a mSata drive enclosure with a usb A cable. Mounted the 1 tb drive in the enclosure and plugged it in. Problem occurred b/c drive not recognized in File Explorer. Googled a bit and found I had to go into Disk Manager and find the drive listed as "Unallocated" and then format the partition. Then it is recognized in Explorer. Next I used Macrium Reflect to clone the 256 gb C drive to the new usb drive - instructions are on the Macrium site. There is also a good YouTube on how to remove the old mSata drive from the 8700 and I followed this and installed the cloned drive as my new C drive. Now that I have some breathing room on C drive the system is a bit snappier.
