XPS 8700, cannot update to A12 BIOS?

Since 23 February 2018, owners of a Dell XPS 8700 are asked to update the Bios to version A12.

I have version A11 of the Bios on my Dell. However, when extracting the exe.-file, I always get error messages 'application has existed !' or otherwise 'parameter error'.

How to fix this ?

Odd, the A12 Fixes states,
- Update to the latest CPU microcode to address CVE-2017-5715 and associated Intel Reboot issue

Yet, the XPS 8700 is NOT on the affected platform list? Download and run this free InSpectre application to check your system. What are the results?

Did you try the other installation methods listed on that driver page "Installation instructions" ?

Yes, the A12 is for the 8700... got notice via Dell Support Assist and installed it (no problem). It is also on the XPS8700 Download page.

Here's the answer I meant to post-

There is no need to extract the file. It is ready to go. Just click on the downloaded exe file and it will start by telling you to close all open windows. Works fine.

It's very unusual to get a bios update for a 5 year old model! Thanks Dell! Downloaded A12 and install it without any problem.

To the original poster--see my other post.

I will try the other methods. Glad to read that others installed it without any problem, so, it should have to work on my pc, too.

Thanks to all who answered my question.

I went into the BIOS Setup, I went to Boot Mode option. I didn’t find ' Legacy Boot Mode '. I found

  • UEFI
  • USB Storage
  • Internal ODD Devices
  • USB Floppy
  • Onboard NIC Device…

What should I do ?

I made a bootable DOS USB key (= USB storage device).

I booted the pc via this  DOS USB key.

Then I copied the file name (XPS_8700_BIOS_A12.EXE) where the executable is located (I:\).

But nothing happened.

It was a bad file name or command.

Can anyone help ?

"Then I copied the file name (XPS_8700_BIOS_A12.EXE) where the executable is located (I:\)."

I assume you mean, you ran/executed the file by typing, at the DOS prompt, the copied file name and then pressing Enter where the executable is located.

If you did what I stated and if it was a bad file name you would have gotten an error like "File not found" or something similar. I think I would download the BIOS file and try again.

In your first post you stated you tried to extract the BIOS file. You don't need to extract it. All you need to do is double-click it in Windows. I would delete the BIOS file you have and download it again, then just double-click it. See the procedure Chris-M post after your initial post, the part that starts with "Run the BIOS update utility from Windows environment".

Thank you for your reaction.

I know I needn't to extract the file, just double-click on it. That is what I did. I expressed myself wrongly in writing that I extracted the file. That went automatically.

I downloaded the file to update the BIOS (= XPS_8700_BIOS_A12.EXE ) at two different moments at two different locations on my pc ('C:\ProgramData\PCDr\6875\Drivers' and under 'Downloads') . I don't think it is a wrong file, but it didn't work.

Something on my pc stops the file from doing its job.
