XPS 8900, Windows 7 to 10 Upgrade

Have been trying to upgrade from Windows 7 Pro to 10 Pro but install is blocked due to need for Bluetooth driver 1.5. My current Bluetooth driver is 1.3.9 which Dell says is the latest and greatest. I have tried the method suggested by Microsoft but my PC says the current 1.3.9 driver is the latest and up to date. Does anyone know of a fix for this? Thanks in advance.

Rather than removing the card you can disable it in the bios. I just checked one of the machines using the Dell Wireless 1801 Bluetooth 4.0 LE and running 1809 (upgraded from Win 7) and driver version is 1.5.1004.3 so I assume it came through Windows Updates. Haven't yet tried to upgrade it to 1903 or 1909.

Success.....before taking the card out I tried 68Cutlass' suggestion of disabling everything in the BIOS. Disabled WiFi/BT and audio to be safe. First attempt to install had the earlier driver block so did a deep uninstall/clean of everything Bluetooth (drivers/registry etc) and made sure there were no background Bluetooth services active. After doing this the install (1909) proceeded without any problems. Rebooted back to the BIOS after install and re-enabled WiFi/BT and audio and Windows reinstalled all the necessary drivers/software. It even updated the Bluetooth driver to 1.5.x so everything is working perfectly. Now I have to get used to the new interface   Many thanks to everyone who pitched in to help......ended up being a pretty cool workaround.

Yeah, have tried that. The latest driver from Dell is 1.3.9 whereas Windows 10 upgrade requires the 1.5 driver and will not complete without it.

Have you looked at dell.com/support for the XPS 8900 under the Drivers and Downloads tab? If you sort by 'Windows 7, 64-bit' under Operating system and 'Network' under Category there are several Bluetooth drivers listed and the one you need will depend upon what Intel or Dell Bluetooth hardware you have.

None of the Windows 10 Bluetooth drivers on the Dell site have a version 1.5, the versions are like 21.10.1.1, 2023.66.1104.2017, or 12.0.1.944.

What Bluetooth hardware do you have, Dell or Intel? Have you tried seaching the manufacturer's website? If the upgrade is telling you that you need a specific driver then must be available somewhere.

Others in this forum have gotten Windows 10 to work on the XPS 8900. Usually a missing device driver will not prevent a Windows installation.

If you can hardwire this PC directly to your router, open Device Manager and right-click the entry for the WiFi+BT card and Uninstall it. Then see if Win 10 will install, and -hopefully- recognize "new hardware" and install a suitable WiFi+BT driver.

Otherwise, you may have to physically remove the WiFi+BT card and do a clean Win 10 install rather than an upgrade on top of Win 7, assuming you can hardwire to the router. But you will need the product keys for any apps you'll need to install in Win 10, eg Microsoft Office, etc.

And you linky she brokie...

Hardware is Dell Wireless 1801 Bluetooth 4.0 LE.....driver is 1.3.905. (details from Device Manager). Microsoft identified issues with Bluetooth working with the latest version of the Windows upgrade from 7 to 10 and requires the 1.5 driver. If the 1.5 driver isn't present the install will not complete (safeguard). You get an info screen advising to upgrade the driver then continue the install. Have run Dell system scan to make sure everything (driver wise) is up to date and current, which it is. I think it's either down to Dell puts out a new driver or Microsoft takes off the install safeguard. Hoping my machine isn't reduced to being a boat anchor.

Thanks Ron....I'm hardwired into the router so will give it a try. Hoping I don't have to do a clean install. Sorry about the broken link.

This may solve your problem. This website has an article about the problem and links to the drivers you need: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4529832/updating-to-windows-10-version-1903-on-devices-with-some-driver-versio

Make sure you're using Win 10 v1909 to upgrade because v1903 broke WiFi+BT on many different PCs. Microsoft deliberately added software to prevent Win 10 1903 from being installed unless the WiFi+BT drivers were updated. I don't know if that continues with 1909.

You can always try physically removing the WiFi+BT card, if uninstalling it in Device Manager doesn't help, and then trying to upgrade from 7 to 10.

I suspect unless you can find newer drivers, you're going to have to remove your WiFi+BT card. And -if you need it- replace the card with one that has the required driver updates.

Looks like I'm going to have to physically remove the card......uninstalling from device manager didn't trick windows into installing. I don't use wifi or BT on this machine so not a big deal. Will have a crack at it tomorrow. Looks like it was trying to install "1909" version of windows.

Sorry, I didn't see that you already tried this.

According to Microsoft the Realtek Bluetooth issue has been resolved and the safeguard hold has been removed but apparently that is not true: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-information/status-windows-10-1909#225msgdesc

If you don't required wireless and Bluetooth, I would do as Ron suggested and try the upgrade after removing the WiFi + BT card.

The safeguard was put back in place for the 1909 build of Windows 10. The 1.3.9 driver works with the previous windows 10 versions.
