XPS 8910, how to extend range of Bluetooth?

I have a XPS8910 that I use inside a computer cabinet at floor level. I can't get any usable range from a bluetooth connection to a portable speaker. I want it to reach my patio. Is there a way to add an external antenna to the PC to extend the range? Thanks for any ideas.

Bluetooth range is usually around 10 ft.

That Bluetooth speaker should work fine on your desk.

A Bluetooth speaker on the patio would normally be driven by your SmartPhone (out there with you).

WiFi would reach. Pretty sure they make those or maybe get an Amazon Echo ?

Bluetooth range is not normally 10 feet. There are 3 classes of bluetooth, each with their own range.

  1. Class 1 transmitting at 100 mW with a range of 100 meters or 328 feet.
  2. Class 2 transmiting at 2.5 mW with a range of 10 meters or 33 feet (most Bluetooth headsets and headphones are common Class 2 devices).
  3. Class 3 transmitting at 1 mW with a range of fewer than 10 meters.

So, if anyone figures this out, please let me know. My bluetooth game controller drops out under 10 feet, let alone 10 meters.

Move the PC out of the cabinet...?

There are BT range extenders (aka: BT routers, BT repeaters) so read this and this for more info...

Yeah, well 10-20 ft is about it for me indoors

You could try a Bluetooth adapter that doesn't have it's antenna buried inside a metal box,

and is even a newer version of BT.
