XPS 8930, memory upgrade

Found this matrix.

Question is if I can place 2 16gb sticks in slot #1 and #3 to make 32gb in total?

Thank you!

Table 2. Memory configuration matrix

Configuration Slot
DIMM1 DIMM2 DIMM3 DIMM4
8 GB 4 GB   4 GB
16 GB 8 GB   8 GB
24 GB 4 GB 4 GB 8 GB 8 GB
32 GB 8 GB 8 GB 8 GB 8 GB
64 GB 16 GB 16 GB 16 GB 16 GB

Memory

The XPS 8930 has four DIMM slots. Your computer supports 8 GB, 16 GB, 24 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB UDIMM DDR4 memory (up to 2400 MHz for i3 processor and up to 2666 MHz for i5/i7/i7k processors).

NOTE: Use slots DIMM1 and DMM3 if you need to use two memory modules

Your column labels are a little off compared to Table 2 in the service manual, but you can put 2 16 GB sticks in for a total of 32 GB, at least this works for the XPS 8910. I would like to point out a couple of things: 1) the slots are labeled wrong in Table 2, you should use slots DIMM1 and DIMM2, 2) look at the system components configuration on page 18 and note the numbering of the memory slots and the color of the securing clips 3) memory should be added in pairs to slots with similar colored securing clips (DIMM1 & DIMM2 are white and DIMM3 & DIMM4 are black) and 4) the note above Table 2 is incorrect (it should be use slots DIMM1 and DIMM2).

I recommend you check out crucial.com for your memory. Install your memory in DIMM1 and DIMM2. What is your present memory configuration? You may still be able to use your current memory while adding additional memory. Note also that the memory matrix does not show all possible memory configurations that work. Others have found other configurations that also work.

I can confirm the 2-16GB DDRs will work on XPS-8930 in DIMM1 & 2 (white tabs) for 32 GB

Also confirm 2-16GB in DIMM1 & 2, AND 1-8GB in DIMM3 (black tab) for 40GB.

But is your 40 GB RAM config running in dual channel mode or has it reverted to single channel mode? Dual channel is faster and more efficient than single channel mode, but requires a pair of matched modules in each bank (based on retention clip color).

You can find out using CPU-Z (free) on its Memory tab, listed as "Channel #".
