DisplayPort on both ends?
Just a wild guess...daisy chain two DP monitors...??

Yes, DP on both ends. Seems like an odd choice for a standard accessory for this PC.

Yes, certainly does sound odd. What does your paperwork say?
I didn't get a cable like that when I got my XPS 8930 in Nov'19.

Re the packing slip, there's nothing listed that corresponds to this DP cable. They did see fit to list a "Windows 10 Placemat" though!

There is no record of a 13" DP to DP cable on the XPS 8930 parts page? Did you purchase this XPS 8930 directly from Dell? What are the Dell part numbers on the cable or cable packaging?

Chris,
Taking your three questions in order: (1) There is no record of a 13" DP to DP cable on the XPS 8930 parts page; (2) yes, I purchased this XPS 8930 directly from Dell; and (3) the part number on the cable is "DP/N 0H71G3" (though there's also a longer version of the part number in tiny print, beginning "CN-0H71G3...").
Thank you for any assistance.

Part number H71G3 =
* 13" DP to DP pass through cable used in conjunction with the add in Thunderbolt 3 I/O card DP and video card DP

I thought it might be an error, but I wanted to confirm it before disposing of the cable. BTW, this DP cable that I received has a DP connector at *both* ends, not Thunderbolt.
Thanks for your assistance!

Thunderbolt 3 uses USB-C connectors for both ends.
Not sure that 8930 has ANY Thunderbolt 3.
I think it has USB-C to Display port.
USB-C port which supports "DisplayPort Alternate Mode"

Display port is not bi directional.
Thunderbolt cannot be added it must be on the system.

Since your 13" cable is DP to DP and not the DP to TB3, the label must be incorrect. Click my name and send me the XPS 8930 service tag number. I am curious to see the internal documentation for it.

The "Windows 10 Placemat" isn't what you're thinking. It's just a folded piece of paper with instructions. It's not a mouse pad or anything like that...
Glad Dell-Chris is helping you figure out what you got and why. But I wouldn't toss that cable. Never know when it might come in handy...

Yeah, I suppose I'll throw it in my box in the attic where I keep my collection (museum) of unused cables and adapters.

We all got that box of ancient, unneeded cables and adapters. You name it, I got it...
So when the video card in my other PC failed, I grabbed a VGA cable from the box and connected the monitor to the PC's onboard VGA port until I got this XPS 8930. So you never know when something old will come in handy...
Enjoy your new toy!

Apologies for the bot asking again for the tag. I got it.
fluxrev, would you mind taking a picture of the rear of your XPS 8930 so that we all can see the added card? A picture like this one showing us the PCIe section =
