XPS 8940, after bios update, will not boot with AMD Radeon

Dell XPS 8940 hangs in Windows, hangs on boot after upgrade. Tried removing AMD software, no change. Works ok without video card. Bios is 2.11.0

Thanks

@epauls  You said XPS 8930, but did you really mean an XPS 8940?

XPS 8940 BIOS 2.11.0 you installed won't let the PC boot when an AMD card is installed.

That version has been replaced by 2.11.1 to fix this AMD GPU issue.  Install this version using the F12 Flash Update option (Read: Updating the BIOS from BIOS Boot Menu (independent of operating system) at that link.)

After 2.11.1 is installed, reinstall your AMD card, and everything should be back to normal

You're welcome. Post back and let us know if BIOS 2.11.1 solves the problem.

BTW: You mentioned resetting BIOS back to defaults, which likely set Secure Boot back to Enabled. If this is a Dell OEM AMD GPU, that shouldn't matter.

If this is a "retail" AMD GPU you bought/installed, you'll have to check the Secure Boot setting and disable it after the latest BIOS update, and before you re-install the card again.

Secure boot was not enabled, cleared cmos to default, no change.

This forum thread may help. Try turning off Secure Boot in the BIOS. Also replacing the CMOS battery and clearing the settings helped other users.

Flashing the bios did the trick, thanks so much. That was a nasty trick.

Great job.

Glad you got it working!

Quite a few XPS 8940 users with AMD cards had similar problems with BIOS 2.11.0. At least Dell was quick to release 2.11.1 to fix the "oopsy"...

I was a computer tech for 35 years and this was not a straight forward fix most people could do.

I am very gratefull for your help.
