XPS 8950, noisy PSU fan, #2

Hi,

I am very disappointed by my new XPS 8950. The PSU fan is very noisy (independently of the workload). I like to work in quiet environment and I will have to buy another computer or another PSU.

Note that the Dell support has been really nice and reactive. They have sent a technician to change the PSU but it appears that the new PSU make the same noise which is just unbearable for me.

I bought the XPS line considering it was premium material. I guess that I can't be refund since the machine was deliver 4 months ago.

Unfortunately no. Only Dell proprietary psu works for 8950.  The proprietary 10 pinout is not yet deciphered and no adapter is available to connect non-Dell psu to pc.  Try ask Dell to ship you a different model of 750w psu and send back the noisy one.  In my experience Dell is quite good with CRU (customer replacement unit).

updated list of Dell oem 750w:

MP23Y Acbel 750W (Aurora R13/R14, XPS 8950)
M92DC Chicony 750W (Aurora R13/R14, XPS 8950)
5TVR6 LiteOn 750W Platinum (Aurora R13/R14, XPS 8950)
FT44X LiteOn 750W Platinum (Aurora R13/R14, XPS 8950)
NW4C3 LiteOn 750W Platinum (Aurora R13/R14, XPS 8950)
M2G8X LiteOn 750W (Aurora R13/R14, XPS 8950)

Several other XPS 8950 users have posted similar PSU fan noise issues.

Suggest you search for those threads, and request another replacement PSU under warranty from Tech Support.

BTW the CPU is water-cooled (12900) and quiet (XPS 8950)

which one of the following oem psu for 8950 is your psu now?  Did Dell replace it with the same model?  there are a few complaints of psu noise but they were considered outliers not norm of 8950.  otoh the 8950 cpu cooler can be noisy depending on air vs liquid and cpu -k vs non-k.  more users discuss cooler noise than psu.  so it seems your psu may be one outlier.  it may be possible to find a quieter model.  NB: only Dell proprietary psu fits 8950.

Thank you for your answer !

The noise has always be the same but I did not worry too much at start because I though that it may be due to the big GPU (RTX3080). It was not the case : the GPU is super quiet (at idle state).

Thank you for your answer !

The PSU has just been changed today and the new one produces the same constant noise : it does appear that this is the "normal" noise for 8950 PSU (or I am very unlucky).

It is possible that I am much less noise tolerant than the average customer (although my wife and the Dell technician who replaced the PSU agreed that it is noisy). In addition, the PSU is way more noisy than the CPU and GPU fans (idle state).

I asked (without too much hope) to be refunded but if that failed I will try to buy a silent PSU. Although the form factor of the Dell PSU is very flat.

Ah, from the picture and legend I understand that the model name corresponds to Dell P/N. So mine is 5TVR6 (not present in your list). The quiet one reported in the user anecdote comes from chicony.

I guess that the models also depend on the consumer country (I am in France).

Apart from the form factor, do you think it is possible to plug a quiet psu (be-quiet, cooler master) into the XPS computer ?

Thank you again for your great help. I will ask Dell for CRU (M92DC).

Some of the psu noise reported are coil whine not fan.

this user reported noisy psu fan satisfactory resolution after psu replaced by a new 750w.https://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/XPS-8950-PSU-unreasonable-fan-noise/m-p/8244303#M73894

A last message to add that Dell proposed a complete refund of the computer.

Thank you again for your help.

me too.  just found my one fan making noise, and I was able to slow and turn it off with plastic strip and verified it's the fan.  shouldn't have to replace power supplies for cheap fans.
