XPS 15 9570, coil whine issue, #3

I bought a brand new Dell XPS 9570 with touch screen yesterday and it has this constant coil whine noise, whether it is plugged in or not, loud enough to distract me constantly while I'm working. The BIOS is already updated to the latest version of 1.8.1, and Dell Update application says that the system is up -to-date. Is there any way to fix this?

I always say this --- if you are not completely happy, return it. You only have 30 days if purchased from Dell and 15 days from other vendors. Otherwise you are stuck! Use that time wisely!

The noise pretty much went down by 1/2 when I disabled Turbo Boost in the BIOS. What I want to know is if this is a defect which will deteriorate with time or something that happens to all ultrabooks with this type of CPU? Also, does disabling Turbo Boost have any significant effect on the performance?

Disabling turbo boost is not a proper solution, kills performance (is proportional to the CPU clock in many tasks).

Coil whine is mostly due to bad voltage regulator coils. It may deteriorate with time, I'm afraid not improve, isn't fixed easily. It is more common in certain specific laptop models, maybe due to bad coils used in production (driven by small size and/or low price, or just accidentally defective material).

I'd suggest return if you can. If you can't, ask for warranty mobo replacement.

The motherboard on my first XPS 9570 was replaced 3 times, all of them with the same problem. The laptop was replaced but unfortunately the new one also has the same problem. It seems that this problem is not just a "simple defect"! I would like this problem to be permanently fixed! In the the beginning, when working late, I tried to hear some music to avoid  the noise but even that didn't work due to the audio problems.

Hi mmont,

Have you been able to run a systems diagnostics yet?  Please run Dell SupportAssist paying particular attention to the audio tests. Make a note of any error messages encountered and post back. If there are none, then it could indicate either a driver or software issue.

Hi dell-robert p,

Thanks for your help but the main issue here is not the sound, many discussions already exists about it. The main discussion here is the coil whine issue also very well known in the community. Most probably it is an hardware problem! And don't get me wrong but I do have "premium" support, my original XPS 9750 was bought last November and a  replacement was made by DELL in January. Still this problem (among others) remains to be solved.

Same issue here. Motherboard replaced 2 times (1 because of coil whine and 2nd for faulty sd card reader found after replacement) and the issue still persists. What I found is that no sound when the laptop runs on the battery only, which I think is logical as a laptop is not operating in full performance.

Just to give an update on my last motherboard replacement (3x), whine noise is still coming out of the device, noise is quieter and less frequent. My colleague has the same model but ~6 months younger (purchase date) then me and does not have any issues.

Hi there,

any update yet on the issue or is it still there? Received my XPS 15 7590 (I9/32GB) a couple of weeks ago and also this annoying issue. Sometimes you want to break the machine. Where did you find the Motherboard/bios specs? I'm facing this issue also.
