Dell XPS 15 - 9560 - HDD - SSD Replacement

Hi

i Bought dell  XPS 15 9560 (i5 7th Gen, 500GB Hdd, Cache 32gb SSD & 8GB Ram) about 6 months ago.

i have ordered Samsung 960 EVO 250GB M.2 to replace Cache 32GB SSD and use it for OS.

Leaving the Mechanical HDD (that came from Dell) there for Storage.

i was wondering can i replace my Mechanical HDD with this SSD also(Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD) to even speed up that storage ?

Yes you should be able to do that. By the way the MX500 by Crucial aka Micron and the 860 EVO are also pretty decently priced so look at those, and they have better power draw characteristics than the 850 EVO.

Honestly you are better off with one large SSD rather than 2 that are 1/2 the size as more drives means more idle/active power draw which can have an impact on battery life.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're trying to do here.  If you're asking if you can install the 960 Evo for your OS and then replace the mechanical drive with an SSD in order to have an extra data drive, yes that's possible -- although as avtella said above, you might find it easier to just buy a larger 960 Evo.

But if you're asking if you can install the 850 and then use the 960 Evo as a cache for the 850, I don't know if NVMe SSDs can be used for caching, but even if you could do that, it would be a pretty big waste of the 960 Evo.  It doesn't make sense to use a 256GB cache drive for a 250GB SSD.  You would get better performance, slightly more storage, and longer battery life if you just used the 960 Evo by itself.  Or of course just use them as two separate drives to have double the storage.

If you were planning to use a PORTION of the 960 Evo as a cache for the 850 while using most of the 960 Evo for regular storage, I don't think that's possible.

Oh wait, you want to use one SSD to cache for another? That would achieve nothing don't do that, other than increased power draw you don't gain any performance.

Thank you Guys. My intent was to use nvme and ssd as separate drives, not as cache.
