Lightweight antivirus for XPS13 9365 2-in-1?

Microsoft's antimalware service is a massive CPU hog when I turn on the XPS13. The whole thing runs like a dog for 20-30 minutes while it does its thing.

Other sites tell me that this cannot be adjusted and that 3rd party antiviruses are less of a hog. Can anyone recommend a lightweight antivirus that they use on their own XPS13 9365?

many thanks

Are you looking for antivirus, or antimalware?  Or an integrated suite?

For antimalware, Malwarebytes Free is hard to beat.  For antivirus, Windows Defender (built into Windows) is generally far better than any of the commercial suites (Norton, McAfee, Avast, etc.) in its system demands.

I don't think it can be disabled without disabling Defender.  There is some information here on how to reduce its system load (and if it's during scheduled scans, one is to reschedule the scans for downtime).

It is the antimalware service part of Windows Defender that is causing the problem, otherwise I would stick with it.

Do you know of any way to disable the antimalware service?

@JP Nicholls  What you're describing isn't normal behavior for Windows Defender, so either this is temporary behavior on a new build as some large scan is occurring in the background, or Defender has some sort of conflict with something else you've installed.  I would recommend trying to identify the underlying cause of the abnormal behavior rather than just trying to ignore it by swapping in a different solution.

I have seen Windows Defender running for a while after updates or upgrades. If you really want to rid yourself of W/Defender, ESET NOD32 is an very low resource AV that I have used for many years.

Solving the Antimalware Service Executable issue is quite easy. There is a similar blog which is very helpfull for me.

If your PC memory usage is getting higher, then WD is keeping running in the background and scanning for the files. Allow me to show you how you can stop Antimalware Service Executable from your PC. Step 1: First, go to settings, and then click on “Update and Security.” Step 2: Turn off “real-time protection” and turn off “cloud-based protection.” Now, try if your Windows PC memory usage has decreased. It is important that you need to find out whether real-time is slowing protection is slowing down your PC. https://itechcliq.com/antimalware-service-executable/
