XPS 13 9305 : issue with external monitor
XPS 13 9305
Hi Dell community,
I would like to connect external Dell monitor (1707FP) to Dell XPS 13 9305 (i5-1135G7) running Windows 11.
I have followed the user manual and I connected Dell XPS USB 3.2 Gen2 port (type C) to adaptor (USB C to HMDI) to monitor's cable (HMDI to DVI port).
Unfortunately, I got the error message on the external monitor:
2 : Digital input
Cannot display This video Mode
Optimum resolution 120 x 1024 60Hz
Please, could anybody guide me what is the problem and how to solve it ?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards.

What resolution do you have the system set to display externally? This is a pretty old monitor that's limited to 1280X1024 resolution -- the newer notebook may be trying to push FHD (1920X1080) that the monitor cannot handle.

Thank you for your reply.
You are absolutely right: the computer should switch to the 1280x1024 resolution (i.e. max resolution supported by the 1707FP monitor).
It is working fine with XPS 15 connected to 1707FP through HDMI-to-DVI cable. The issue is related to USB C to HDMI adaptor. XPS 13 has only USB C port. Do you think I would have the same issue if I would use USB C to DisplayPort adaptor ?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards.

Hi ejn63,
Thank you for the reply.
You are absolutely right. The max resolution of 1707FP monitor is 1280 x 1024. Anyway, the computer (by default 1920 x 1280) should automatically switch and synchronize with that. For instance, it is working well with XPS 15 connected to 1707FP through HDMI port and HDMI-to-DVI cable. Unfortunately, XPS 13 has no HDMI port, only USB C ports. The issue is surely related to the characteristics of the adaptor (USB C to HDMI). I tested the adaptor with other configuration and I confirm it is working.
Question: Do you think I would have better chance with USB C to DisplayPort adaptor ?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards.

Hi ejn63,
Actually, the real question is : could we connect through USB C port XPS 13 (or 15) to external 1280x1024 monitor (with DVI or VGA ports) ?
By the way, we know it is working through HDMI port (of XPS 15).
Best regards.
