XPS 15 - Constant Screen Flashing

Hello,

I have a Dell XPS 15 9570 running the 1.11.3 Bios.  It's hooked up a TB 16 and an external monitor through DisplayPort.

When I use my laptop with the screen open (two monitor setup) I get screen flashing every minute or so where both screens go black and then back to normal.  I've updated all the video drivers; i've check the cables and connections but nothing seem to fix this.  Looking through the forum I saw entries with similar issue but none of those seem to fix the problem.

Anyone find a fix?  It's truly annoying and distracting.

Thanks.

I too am having this issue on an XPS 15 7590. Given the prevalence of the issue and the fact that it seems to cross many models and configurations (i.e. Display Port, USB C, HDMI and even via docks) is seems the most likely cause would be either the graphics modules or the graphics drivers. I imagine the commonality between all of the models I have seen mentioned (and this issue goes back quite some time) is the integrated Intel based Graphics adapters.

It doesn't take much searching to find the exact symptoms and behavior such as this:

and

https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-15-9560-external-monitors-keep-turning-black-2/td-p/7361376?r...

And this was on older models. They all share 1 thing though and that's the dual graphics set up.

Dell 15.6" XPS 15 9550,9560,9570
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10xx
Intel UHD Graphics 630 GPU

Dell 15.6" XPS 15 7590 - 2020
NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5
Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 GPU

My guess is that what is happening is that the integrated graphics, Intels UHD Graphics 630 GPU, can't get enough power and this results in drop-outs.

This would explain why the problem doesn't seem to arise in full screen (not that I have seen) and seems to occur when putting a secondary screen under load.

This is not to be confused (as I have seen much of) with the issue where Windows 10 decides to sleep your monitor after about 2 minutes which BTW you can resolve by checking out this: https://www.auslogics.com/en/articles/windows-10-going-sleep-mode-minutes-fixed/

Seems to me that both Dell and Intel need to do some work to ensure that the hardware can cope given the limited power provided by the power supply. Which I'm sure can be corrected through a driver update to ensure that the integrated graphics are utilizing power conserving features correctly and not over-extending.

Either way I hope there is a resolution to the problem ASAP as it is extremely annoying.
