advice pse, not urgent

hi, I have had an xps L502X for a few years, and this year the time has come to get a new laptop for various reasons. I wondered if anyone would know about comparing up to date processors  with those of say 5 years ago. My xps has the i7-2630 2.00 GHz 4 core, and I wondered if I got the xps with an i5 processor would it be comparable to the particular i7 that I have. I don't want to go "down" in quality so any advice would be helpful.
