Area-51m R1, GPU throttling
I have tweaked up my 9900k/2080 Area 51m to keep CPU temps in the 80's during gaming, but I can't get the gpu to stop throttling. I am using the latest bios (I tried to downgrade, but the installer will not let me downgrade) and I have attempted to undervolt the GPU - throttlestop doesn't see the nvidia, only the intel GPU and afterburner seems to have voltage changes locked, I used the ga and beta version, set both to unlock voltage, and neither give me the access to undervolt. Am I missing something here? Even playing Overwatch, my GPU is hitting 75c and dropping fps to 12-15. I have slightly underclocked the gpu in acc for now, but there has got to be a better way. Anyone have any ideas or experience to share?

Yes it is. Today they launched a new BIOS 1.8.1 which as always, doesn't fix or change nothing on the GPU throttling by BIOS. So, we have a $4000 laptop which you can't use it to his full potential.
This does need fixing. As others have said, it’s a lot of money to put down for something that’s not working as it should. I love the laptop but this issue is so frustrating. Even just some comms from Dell/Alienware on where we stand, are they actually trying to fix this or will they just keep the throttling as it is in all future updates? Makes me think twice about buying from them in the future.

This is the last I know from them;
"Of course, our engineers work on a continuous improvement for our devices and this issue is something they're aware. We can't give you an ETA since we don't have access to that information but it definitely will be worked on."This message is after the last BIOSI wish I found this thread earlier. I ordered an Area-51m with 9900k and RTX 2080 at the end of November and, at the moment, the order has been delayed two times due to CPU shortage. I don't bother the wait that much but this information about thermal throttling is very concerning, to say the least. I think that this info needs to be highlighted more in all the social media, youtube's older reviews etc. I love the concept of the Area-51m and I want to support Alienware but at this point, with a crippled GPU at such low temp, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to cancel the order and see if they are about to launch a newer version at CES 2020.

Hmmm,
I am so glad I went with the 8700K + RTX 2070 Combo,
I knew that the 9900K chip in a laptop was absurd for heat. Honestly if my RTX has any throttling issues, I never see them because my GPU never gets beyond 65C even maxed out with Furmark on CPU and GPU, performance mode for fans and a -126mv undervolt. I do feel for you guys, and have read many threads about this. I was going to update the RTX 2070 Vbios to there latest one they say to move to 1.0.0.1 but I think ill stick with what I have and the 1.7.3 bios I am running, I have had no issues.

Yeah, It's a problem we have talked a lot and they told us that a new BIOS version is being worked on. For the moment we don't have any news since December and the problem it's still here.

Is this still an ongoing issue? I have a 9900K/RTX 2080 on the way very soon and this is now making me wonder if I will not be able to just un-box and play without experiencing thermal throttling of the GPU and reduced performance. £4000 is a lot of money for something if it's not going to work.
