Will firmware be destroyed?
I have been tasked with wiping drives from a VNX 5700 array, I was able to wipe the first rack successfully, however, the second rack did not have a VNX with it, just the array. My quest is, can we wipe these drives outside of the disk shelf and still have maintain their firmware?

I don't believe you will be able to do that - the format on the drives is different from normal drives. But the firmware on the drive should not change as long as you do not run a firmware upgrade. You're only concerned about the data on the drives - to ensure that the data is completely wiped, you'll need to use the VNX with the drives connected to run the disk clean utility.
