SSD Cache on Precision Tower T3420?

Hello,

I am using a Precision Tower T3420 with Windows 7 Pro (x64).

I'd like to add an SSD as a cache for the harddisk. However, I didn't find any informations at Dell and there are contradictory informations from Intel: the chipset C236 PCH is specified as supporting "Intel Smart Response Technology" (their wording for the cache), while on the official Intel SRT website only other chipsets are mentioned... :emotion-42:

So, will the T3420 support using an SSD drive as cache for the harddisk? (And if, what are the conditions and/or limitations?)

Thanks, Tilmann

    Hi Tilmann,

yes with Raid on in BIOS activated you could use a SSD as cache disk as long it is connected to mother board and not to a Add-In Card Raid controller.

Please infrom me if you had futher questions.

Please send me your Service Tag as PM that i could log this case.

If you spaek German you could switch to German language if you want.

    Hello Martin,

thanks for your answer. I prefer english in this case - providing a larger audience for my question as well as for the solutions I am hoping for...

So I got a 60 GB SSD and mounted it into the PC. It is correctly detected by BIOS and Windows, and by Intel RST as well. I did not create a partition on it. In the BIOS, the SATA is configured for RAID.

In the Intel RST UI, I was offered to activate the acceleration. After entering the required information, I got an error message (screenshot attached).

Remark: I'd like to add a second screenshot with the settings I made, but unfortunately this system doesn't allow for two attachmens...:emotion-40:

Searching for the error code, I found a note on the Intel website that RST requires at least 5 MB at the end of the HDD for its own data - related to Intel Optane memory, however who knows? I reserved several MB (say: 100) at the end of the HDD, but the error persists.

No matter what (and how often) I do, I always get this error that doesn't provide ANY useful information about what's really going wrong here. :emotion-39:

Oh, and I also found someone who had problems caused by his antivirus software during activation of the acceleration. I tried that as well, but also with switched-off virus protection the error persist.

Any ideas? Or, even better, a solution?

    Thanks, Tilmann

    Hi Tillmann,

if you preffer English for a bigger audience please use http://en.community.dell.com/ instead German form.

For config a IRST we offer always to create a Backup from you files and steup you wanted config at a clean Installation.

Raid on must be activated in BIOS and Disks must be connected to the same controller direct on Mainboard.

    regards Martin

    Hallo Martin,
