Equallogic performance
Greetings,
I use Commvault to backup to a volume my Equallogic group and it is running dirt slow.
Granted it may be a Commvault issue but I am confident that I have configured the backup properly so I started looking at the Equallogic performance and
noticed some things that don't seem right.
Here is my setup:
- 1 Dell M1000e Chassis w/ 5 x M600 Blades (1 ESX and 4 M2k8R2(x64)
- 2 x Cisco 3130s (IOS 15.0(2)SE) in the back of the M1000e connected to:
- 1 x Cisco 3750x48 (IOS 12.2(55)SE3) connected to:
- 1 group consisting of 4 x PS5000x's (FW V6.0.2)
All primary and secondary controllers are connected to the 3750
SANHQ 2.5.0 and HitKit 4.5 installed on one MS2k8 box
Switches are for private (iSCSI) network and used solely for backup traffic and VM connectivity only so I do not have separate vlans carved out for the
backup traffic (perhaps I should...not sure).
The backup I am trying to run is about 1.1 TB in size and is taking almost 24 hours to get to from 25% to 31%
My system is setup for 9000 MTU from start to finish.
So I pull up SANHQ..and look at the average I/O on the receiving volume in question while trying to run a backup and the results are:
Average I/O size: reads - 101.33 KB, write - 244.2 KB
Average IOPS: reads - <1.0, Writes - 23.82
Average latency: reads - 7.00 ms, writes - 97.5 ms
Average I/O rate: reads - <1.0KB/sec, write - 5.68 MB/sec
Average que depth: 8.33
This group is also showing a warning (Alert ID 5.3) that 2 of my ports (eth 1 and eth 2) are hitting a "send load" of <97%
Coincidentally these 2 ports (both on different boxes in the group) are showing a speed of 100 Mbps / 1500 MTU while the remaining 10 active ports
are showing 1 Gbps / 9000 MTU.
Oh yea..the NICS on all hosts are Broadcom BCM5709S NetXtreme II GigE (1GB) with current fw and MPIO is set to Round Robin appears to running properly on the host with the HitKit installed (2 nics/6 connections to the receiving volume)
Some things I still need to try:
I believe I need to install the HitKit on all hosts that touch the group?
I am thinking that I have to enable flow control on the switches and the NICs?
And I am also thinking about moving the switch ports in question into dedicated portchannels.
I'm also trying my best to follow the Dell Equallogic Configuration Guide V13.4 (Dec 2012)
I know this is a lot to digest but I would greatly appreciate any analysis / feedback to help me improve my performance issues.
I'm by no means an expert at any of this.
Please let me know if I can provide more info.
Thanks

Hey Don
I am using 2 Cisco 3130X's and 1 Cisco 3750X-48P
Is there a way to configure individual controller ports (i.e CLI)..I had thought about that but wasn't sure if I could configure each one individually. Doesn't seem to be a way in GUI.
Also...was considering opening a ticket after I've expended all other avenues.
Thanks
Mike
