We've faced an issue with SEDs disk availability for builtin PSm4110. It was installed and configured 5 years ago with security enabled. Warranty expired some time ago and it's impossible to find a replacement for DELL 1TB SED SAS that would work in EQL. Our DELL rep mentioned that the kit is not available from DELL for that storage anymore.
I've tried two different DELL ENTERPRISE branded ST91000640SS with SED support and it did not recognize them. We're still running v7.1.5. Raid6 configured on top of 14HDDs, so we can survive one more drive failure but not more.
Can you please recommend any solution for that issue other than rebuilding the storage with regular disks that are more available?
All I can suggest is keep looking for a third party with the correct drives. It has to be specifically manufactured for EQL arrays. Dell server, or other Dell storage drives (e.g. MD/ME4/SC arrays) won't work either.
Otherwise, backup and restoring onto non-SED EQL drives would be only option.
Also do not MIX SED and non-SED drives. On a failover or powerup the array will fail to start up completely until you remove the non-SED drive.
thank you Don. Can you please provide some hint on how to confirm the disk is Equallogic compatible. Is there any list with PN/FW version that can be used to verify the disk ahead of time?
I've seen DELL hdds are labeled as 'DELL', 'DELL ENTERPRISE', 'DELL ENTERPRISE PLUS'. Is there any other gradation based on the product line?
I'm sorry but I don't. I looked around for something that would be on the drive and there are different drives for that same capacity. As drives are never single sourced.
