I have a Dell PE-2950/III with a PERC 6/i drive controller abd 4 72GB physical hard drives. I have set up drives 0 & 1 as RAID1. I want to set up drive 2 as a RAID0 drive and I want to set up drive 3 as a hot spare for drive 2. I select RAID Level 0, check the box for Drive ID 00:02, select the Advanced Settings box, select the Configure HotSpare box, then enter OK. A window titled Dedicated Hotspare for Disk Group 1 pops up with the message "No PD Available". What do I need to do to assign the remaining unused Drive ID 00:03 as a HotSpare for Drive ID 00:02?
I am pretty sure I did this exact sequence on other PE-2950s and had the option to check the box for Drive ID 00:03 when the Dedicated Hotspare for Disk Group 1 window popped up.
it is not possible to create a hotspare for a raid 0, even if the raid0 is on a single disk, a hotspare only works for raidlevels who have a failover, in example, a raid 5 consists 3 drives, the parity for reassembling a failed drive is spreaded over the 3 drisks, if 1 drive fails in a raid 5 , the raidlavel degrades, but the data are still accessible and the failed drive can be rebuilded with a new harddrive, a hotspare (can be setup dedicated for a dedicated raidlvel or can be setup as global)will be set up to have a harddrive ready, when a drive in raidlvel faisl, a raid 0 is a stripng over several disks with no opportunity to regenerate a failed rive, when the raidlvel fails, please refer to following links :
