SAS6i/R RAID expansion issue

We have a R805 with SAS6i/R. We upgraded the RAID 1 73GB drives to 300GB drives recently via the replace 1 drive at a time and rebuild the array method. We are however unable to use the additional space as both OMSA 5.5 & 6.1 do recognize the larger drivers but still indicate 0GB available for RAID disk space available. Does anyone know what the fix is?

    Hello cchintx,

maybe this helps you to solve your issue, the following links with the steps in open manage are based on open manage 5.5 , if you are using a new version , please refer the suitable documents and PLEASe, in case the next steps are fail, BACKUP the data before, thks.
Here we go :did you check http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/software/svradmin/5.5/en/UG/html/storage.htm#wp1039152 ? at "Storage Management Task" ff the needed steps are described. Another possibilty is to extent via commandline with open manage with the command "omconfig Reconfiguring Virtual Disks" please refer the docs at http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/software/svradmin/5.5/en/CLI/html/storage.htm#wp1091778
Thats 50% of the work, no you need to tell the operating system that there is new unpartitioned disk space
you need to expand the new additional space on operating systemlevel, the operating system only recognizes the given disk space given by RAID LUN.
assuming you are using windows as operating system you need open up a commandline and add the new unpartioned space to existing logical drive, to do so , open a cmd and use diskpart , but be warned, if the logical drive is the primary in windows you cannot extend on the fly, please refer http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415/en-us as well as http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325590/en-us

    next part is followed up

    2nd part

My recommendation to solve : do an image with i.e. the demo of symatec system recovery (you can do it on the fly without taking off the server), then re create a raid 1 with the new 300 gb drives via sas bios, restore the image, system recovery a function to use the full disk space, please refer the docs on their website , there you also can get the demo version, you can also perform these actions with other imaging tools like arcronis (or offline if using ESX, CITRIX or LINUX)
If you are using other operating system than windows please refer the docs for extending existing logical drives

If unsure please provide used operating system on server or post upcoming questions
hopefully these infos help you out and if successful (or not) please post a result thank you.

    Cheers

Thanks for the response. It doesn't look like the SAS6 supports the expansion feature:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\SysMgt\oma\bin>omconfig storage vdisk action=reconfigure controller=0 vdisk=0 size=max raid=r1 pdisk=0:0:0,0:0:1
    Operation not supported. Read, action=reconfigure
Refer to the documentation for more information.

    Hi nepharim,
Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. It looks like the SAS6 may not support the expansion feature:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\SysMgt\oma\bin>omconfig storage vdisk action=reconfigure controller=0 vdisk=0 size=max raid=r1 pdisk=0:0:0,0:0:1

    Hello cchintx,

I've verifièd my ressources and ,unfortunately, you are right , the SAS 6IR (even with actual firmware) does not support extending existing raidlevels. Please apologize my confusion with the PERC 6i , maybe the alternative with imaging will help to solve.

When you are going to intend to image your Installation and recreate the LUN with with new 300 GB disks, at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/index.php you will find another , cost free tool, to resize your existing partition, please have a look at the docs on web site

    Best regards

    Marcus
