For engineering applications where dGPU is used mostly for calculations and without real-time visualization, presence of a mux switch would not make a difference.
Mux switch is beneficial in applications where graphics intensive visualizations are to be displayed in real-time on a monitor. The displaying part is where presence of a mux switch makes the difference.
Surely for your gaming, presence of mux switch will improve the performance.
Is it only the alienware systems that have the MUX switch or would something like the G15 511 have the capability as well. I want to make sure I get a laptop with the ability to use G-Sync out of the USB-C DisplayPort.

It really depends on whether you need the system to have true discrete video -- if you do, buy an Alienware system.
