I have the Dell g7 7588 with the 1060 max-q design and i am wanting to upgrade to something more powerful. what are my options and is it worth it. Also would it be better to get an external GPU?
If the system has a thunderbolt port, it may be an option. However, note that these devices are not standardized -one or another may or may not work, and you will need an external monitor to use one at full speed.
If the system does not have a Thunderbolt port, then an external GPU is not going to be a practical option.

Welcome to the Dell Community @Thephilly64
Sorry but the GPU is soldered to the system board and cannot be upgraded.

As you can see you already have the best GPU for your system.
So even upgrading the system board is not an option.
