Intel Iris XE, not hardware accelerating

I have an Inspiron 5502 (1135G7) with the Intel Iris XE as the integrated processor.

The system is running fresh Windows (without any other modifications, apart from installing Google Chrome / Firefox / Opera) with all the latest updates installed.

Specifically for the Intel Iris XE driver, it's using the 27.20.100.9316 one.

I've noticed that when using a web browser (mentioned above) playing a YouTube video at 1080p@60fps, the whole process is happening on the CPU as if the GPU is hardly ever used. That means that the CPU usage is sky-rocketing and the whole browser becomes laggy.

Chrome's ""chrome://gpu/"" internals page, shows that HW Acceleration is indeed enabled and it can see the Intel Iris XE.

In the task manager while playing a 1080p@60fps video in YouTube, the video decode graph (on the GPU panel) is hardly being used (5-10%) while the CPU is skyrocketing to almost constantly +50-90% while the whole browser lags.

Is this behavior normal?

I've tried doing these (all in a different fresh environment, both with AC and Battery) :

  • Installing the latest DCH Driver from Intel instead of the 27.20 one.
  • Adding "High Performance" on "Graphics Settings" for the browsers.

Also a quick note for the DELL moderators:

When I installed the DCH driver I wanted to go back to the DELL's one (the 27.20 one), I naturally went to my laptops website (using the service tag) and went to manually find the driver (automatic didn't work, even when I removed the driver myself) it only listed the Intel UHD one and the Nvidia one... No mention of the Intel Iris XE driver anywhere so I just reinstalled the whole OS...

Seems like either Windows Bug not reading GPU usages correctly

    or Processor/Firmware Bug.

Cause machine doesn't have any discrete and GPU is embedded on Processor itself, without GPU being used you can not play a video. Try bumping up the resolution to 4k on youtube

Open SupportAssist > Troubleshooting > I wan to troubleshoot my PC > Scan a specific piece of hardware > Graphics > stress test. This should push GPU to 100%

Yes Names of Drivers are different but they are all the same.
