Whenever, I click on the Windows 11 Mouse Icon in Control Panel, a popup box will appear stating -"Unable to connect to the Syaptics Pointing Device Driver" and when I check the "Mice and other pointing device" in Device Manager, there is no listing for the "Synaptics SMbus touchpad", although all the functions of the touchpad appear to be working fine.
I also get the same error when I click on: - "Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Related settings > Additional mouse settings" as there is a [^] at the end of the Settings box rather than a ->
The Laptop is a new Dell Inspiron 15 3000, Model 3505, which came with a free upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, however when I look on the Dell Drivers webpage for the above Laptop, there are no Synaptic touchpad drivers listed.
Step 1: Open Registry Editor with Windows + R and type "regedit"
Step: 2: navigate the folders to reach this point: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Step 3: Under the Class folder, you'll find a long list of keys. If you're issue is like mine and is related to only the touchpad, find and open 4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 (take your time, make sure you don't modify the wrong folder)
Step 4: If you see the file "Upperfilters", delete it.
Step 5: Right click, select "new", select "New Multi-String Value" and name it "Upperfilters". You're essentially remaking the file you just deleted.
Step 6: Double click on the new "Upperfilters" value you just made. In the "Value Data" box, type "mouclass" and save. You might have a pop-up say something along the lines of "we can't register blank lines" but you can just ignore it. I don't know if the system is cap sensitive, but just in case I used the exact capitalization used in the reddit post. Capital U for Upperfilters, and all low caps for mouclass.
You should now have a replacement file with the following information: Name: Upperfilters Type: REG_MULTI_SZ Data: mouclass
Now restart your computer, if it worked, nothing should be broken and your touchpad issues should be fixed!
When I looked under the Class Folder:- "4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318" in the Windows 11 Registry the file: Upperfilters was showing as (UpperFilters).
Sadly the above suggestion did not solve the problem with the Synaptics Error Message and the problem still occurred when I rolled back the Operating System on the Laptop to Windows 10 via a Factory Reset.
For a brand-new system, I know this is quite unexpected. I apologize for the trouble. Don’t worry, we are confident that the seller should help you sort this out, have you contacted them yet?
