Dell and Speed Shift - Dell 7400
Hello,
I have the Dell 7400 and noticed that the CPU frequencies were always near max (4.2 - 4.3 GHz) even when the CPU wasn't doing much.
No matter what I did with Dell Power Manager, etc., I could not get the CPU's to slow down. Battery life was reduced, fan noise was present and heat would build up.
Doing some research on the Internet, it seems Dell had not activated speed shift for skylake and later processors. I checked my BIOS and I was happy to see that it was there and checked.
However, it didn't seem to have any effect.
I downloaded and installed Throttlestop, and simply activated speed shift - I made no other changes. Now the laptop behaves exactly as I would have expected... low frequencies at rest, turbo freq when doing work.
One more quick aside is that I noticed that undervolting was locked... this is ok for a work laptop - but I did find it interesting.
Anyone else experience this or discuss this with Dell? Are your frequencies always high?

Ah, I just saw this post. I was hoping Throttlestop could help. As I mentioned in the other thread, doesn't turning off turbo boost also make things slower?
It might seem like you are getting better results, but that is because the laptop was thermally throttled to the slower speeds with the heat, anyway, before you turned turbo boost off.
All this being said, I have to admit that my computer without throttlestop is not TERRIBLE....it just runs a bit hotter.

My company won't allow such software downloads. I turned off Intel Turbo Boost and that fixed the fan noise and heat problems. It even got a higher cinebench score if you can believe it. Turning off hyper-threading would have some benefits too if anyone thinks it's still too loud and hot, would be slower still though.
