E6400 - are upgrades worth it?

I love my E6400 but sometimes it just goes on a bit of a go slow. 

I know that I overload it - I often have 3 browsers open with multiple tabs in each browser and it'll take a fair while to open everything up.

 

It opens software quite quickly though.

I really don't relish the thought of having to move everything over to a new laptop and I wonder if it's worth upgrading the network card, memory and cpu?

Would that make much of a difference?

Currently have standard Intel 5300 network card and standard processor and 4GB RAM.  It's got an SSD in it already.

The guy from my broadband supplier said that the network card probably couldn't cope with the super fast fibre speeds that I can get.

    Would the upgrades help (RAM for sure, Wifi adapter, CPU) probably but we are talking about an almost 12 year old system. The cost outweighs the benefits. Moving over to a new system is not that much work assuming you are using Windows 10 now. A new much faster far more modern system would be much more enjoyable to work with. And if you are still using anything older than Windows 10, then consider that support for them ended already (Windows 7 ends in January). So Windows 10 is a far more secure OS. And your broadband supplier is correct in that your Wifi does not support their speeds.

    I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on a Optiplex 3020.

    The bootup is faster; PC stills has a mechanical hard drive.

    The upgrade to Windows 10 is still FREE.

    I'm still on Windows 7 which is part of the reason I'm thinking of retiring the E6400.

    I've seen a Latitude E7470  with Core i5 6th Gen, 8GB RAM and 512GB SDD.  I've no idea how old this is, but would it be a decent upgrade?

    Yes the E7470 is a decent upgrade.

    Dell 6th Gen  2016

    Only 2-3 years old.

    Thank you.  I have loved my little E6400 - I mean how many people can have an 11 year old laptop that still works beautifully?  Kudos to Dell's business laptops

    Just to say...my E6400 is still working (as of Nov 2023). Not mega fast but not too slow either! Needs a new battery but still works when plugged in.

    Its old...15 years now!

    Have upgraded it to Windows 10 Pro instead of the original Vista lol. Certainly a workhorse and credit to Dell's business laptops.
