All remote desktop software crashes on Latitude E6500 with NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M

Hi,

I have a new latitude E6500 with the an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M card. The resolution of the card is great 1920x1200. Alas if I start a remote desktop connection with rdesktop or tightvnc to on a windows machine the card completely crashes the E6500 system. I have tried this with Ubuntu 8.04 and Ubuntu 8.10 running either a terminal server on the windows side or a tightvnc server on the windows side.

I contacted Ubuntu, I have a support contract with them and they said we can do *nothing* because this is a proprietary driver. I contacted NVIDIA and they suggested I install the latest driver (180), I had already tried 173 and 177. This turned out to be quite a challenge but after successfully installing the 180 driver my system still crashed.

Clearly the E6500 is not too Ubuntu friendly with the NVIDIA card.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone tried the Intel card that the E6500 is also offered with? If necessary I would be prepared to swap cards but would like to know if the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHDworks with remote desktop software?

    Hi, How do you know that it is really the card crashing your system? It may be another problem... Have you tried the opensource 'nv' driver? It still crashes? I do not recommend you to swap cards. I believe the NVIDIA Quadro has better performance, and on the other hand the 4500HD is known to have tearing problems with video playback (it will be certainly fixed by intel, but when the fix will be included in the driver is not known). On the other hand, with the propietary nvidia drivers you can have PureVideo features, such as h.264 playback reproduction, using VDAPU. No HD playback acceleration is possible with the Intel X4500HD under Linux at the moment. Is your Ubuntu 64bit? You may try a livecd of another architecture (32bit if you use 64bit, 64bits otherwise) to see if your problems still arise.

    Hi Matormo,

    I tried the open source nv driver and the problem went away. However, the open source driver has v. low resolution, I forget what, something like 1024x768 which is pretty useless. So yes I am pretty sure it is a NVIDIA proprietary driver problem and it renders my computer pretty useless since I need to do a fair amount of remote desktop work. I am using 32-bit ubuntu. Thanks for the advice, it seems like both cards have problems but for my work the NVIDIA card means I cannot get my work done!

    Hi,

    It's very strange that you get this low resolution with the nv driver. I'm sure I've used it with bigger resolutions and even with dual head. I will try when I arrive at home.

    You can try with a 64bit ubuntu version, and install the 64bit nvidia drivers.
