debian based distro not detecting network eth0 on Dell Dimension 9100
I installed mepis ( debian based ) on a Dell Dimension 9100.
Now i want to run pppoe-conf but get the following error:
Sorry, no working ethernet card could be found. If you do have an interface card which was not autodetected so far, you probably wish to load the driver manually using the modconf utility. Run modconf now? Y /usr/sbin/pppoeconf: line401: modconf: command not found
What type of ethernet card do you have, some of the intel ones require a special linux driver for them to work right. Otherwise post the brand and we will see if we can find a driver.
I too just bought a 9100, the ethernet device is an Itel Pro 100VE. It is also undetected by Debian Sarge. It does list the Intel Pro 100 when the network detection fails, but it does not seem to work. There is apparently an updated driver on intel's website, but I haven't been able to get it to compile successfully.

You will need that driver, you couldn't just download an rpm file and install it that way? Or are you missing dependencies? If you are getting an error, you can post it and maybe someone will know what is wrong.
"make install just gives alot of error on files that are not found?"
This pretty typical, these are dependencies in other packages you need, it may be worth trying to find those...you may have 20 or 30 failed dependencies, but half or more of them may be in one package.
If compiling it doesn't work, feel free to post the errors from installing the package and we can see if we can find them. If compiling does work, let us know.
