Ubunto for dell laptops

Hi!

I heard the news about Dell shipping linux in their laptops and congratulate myself for having a Dell laptop.

Nevertheless I have a question:

- Will the Ubuntu's kernel installed in the laptop be fine-tuned to work with all the devices ?

- In that case, what about costumers who already bought a Dell? Will there be a downloadable pre-configured ubuntu release?

Thanks in advance,
Keep up the good work,
LL

If you go over to www.ubuntu.com you can find a link to download a live CD version of Ubuntu 7.04 and check it out to see if it works with your laptop. :) I have an older Dimension-series desktop, and just about everything worked out of the box with it.

    lflobo,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Dell will only be shipping Ubuntu on certain systems and only support the systems that it is shipped on.

My laptop is a Dell Latitude D820, is this laptop going to be supported? Is there any list of supported models? Thanks, LL

http://www.linux-laptop.net/ You don't have to run Ubuntu although it is an excellent distro.

I know... I am using debian (the one and only :)) Pretty much everything is working with kernel 2.6.20, except the temperature monitor for core2 duo (i know there is a patch for it...) and still can't suspend2 with nvidia. When I heard the news about dell shipping Linux, I just thought that they would be releasing a series of patches and a .config for each laptop for vanilla kernels. That would ne just great. Looking at the amount and quality of services that dell offers to its clients, this step for the linux community would not surprise me at all. Regards, LL
