Alienware M11x 3G
Hi all,
The recent M11X refresh has really tickled my fancy and I'm on the very verge of buying one... only problem is: the models offered here in Australia don't come with built-in 3G. However, I understand the US M11X does have a 3G module. I might be there later in the year and could pick one up then (or possibly even purchase online, if Dell does international orders), but before dishing out the cash, my questions are:
1. Would the 3G module work in Austraila (and also Europe - specifically, the UK)?
2. Is it locked to a provider?
3. How easily can the SIM be changed/removed?
4. Which 3G module does the US M11X include? I believe it's a Gobi of some type but I can't seem to find any further information.
...and, I guess...
5. Are there any forseeable issues which might prevent me from using the embedded 3G outside of the US?
Apologies if this post is in the wrong area.
Cheers all
D

Q: Would the 3G module work in Austraila (and also Europe - specifically, the UK)?
A: The Gobi card works around the world with the following standards:
* HSDPA, WCDMA, EDGE, GPRS (Requires SIM)
* AT&T (US)
* Vodafone (EMEA & APJ)
* Verizon Wireless - HSPA (Global)
* Sprint International
* EVDO Rev. A/EVDO Rev. 0/1xRTT (No SIM)
* Verizon (US)
* Sprint (US)Q: Is it locked to a provider?
A: We don’t think so, but you will need a SIM or a contract with the carrier plus activation/etc.Q: How easily can the SIM be changed/removed?
A: Easily. it's right on the side of the system next to the card reader.Q: Which 3G module does the US M11X include? I believe it's a Gobi of some type but I can't seem to find any further information.

Hi,
I have been reading this post and it seems relevant, I am at the end of a long road with a DW5620 card that I purchased from a provider in the US. They have assured me it is unlocked, and should be a simple case of installing it in my alienware which like yours has the sim card slot on the side.
The gobi 2000 (DW5620) seems very capable and supports all the standards, however I could not gen anything to work. If I use the dell software it tells me that the card is not Activated and points me to Verizon. However if I change the firmware file to the UK vodafone version, and install the vodafone connection software it tells me there is a signal, and then when I try to connect it tells me the device is in use.
I have run all the hardware diagnostics and the hardware flies through all of it. But I can't for the life of me get it working. I am an IT support tech by trade, and as far as I can see I have tried all the tricks in the book but all I have managed so far is to waste 18 hours of my time fiddling with it.
I have now ripped it out in disgust and am looking for a more generic alternate.
Hope this is of some help, if anyone does know how to get this working, I would love to know :-)
Thanks
Brian

C'mon, Dell, seriously? No answers? What, you don't want to make a sale here?
