Hey Dazman:  one thing that may help is if you enable Vertical Sync, or "Vsync", in the game's options.  If you can't do this inside the game, I know that nVidia's control panel will let you customize this in the "Applications" area of the nVidia Control Panel (I believe it may call it "wait for vertical sync").

My Area-51 ALX is awesome, but I discovered that when I played some games, it was actually *too* good.  For example, playing Halo 2 my framerates would rocket above 500fps!  Your hardware doesn't like to do this, and it's wasting its energy.   "VSync" means that the number of frames output to your screen matches the number of frames the screen presents to your eyes--anything above and beyond that is wasted processing time (and heat!).

Halo 2 and a couple of other games would do just like you describe, sometimes completely powering off with no Blue Screen of Death first.  Once I set VSync I have not had the problem since.

    Hope that helps!

There is a very strong chance that your video cards power cables are not correct. You need to read this and make changes if they are wrong.   http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=90942&doclang=en&l=en&s=dhs
