Factory Restore Help Alienware M15x (2010)
A few weeks back my roommate took to my laptop to go and watch a movie. Not sure what site he used but he said my computer began to talk coupled with a pop-up he couldn't get rid of, then in a panic he forced shut down.
That evening I scanned with AVAST and it came up empty, but my laptop continues to run terribly slow, I can't play any games and boot time is longer then it usually is.
First thing I went to do is system restore, tried multiple restore points all failed to work both in and out of safe mode. Tried going to repair computer through F8 on startup as well.
Now i just want to factory restore my M15x. I can't find my Windows disk and AlienRespawn is no where to be found but in a Windows.Old folder...Went to download Dells Backup Restore program which also kept crashing and failing.
I've been scouring the web for days for a solution but can't seem to find one. Thought i'd open up my own post as a last resort as I continue to look for my windows CD. [:'(]
Forgive my ignorance and if anyone has any insight the help is appreciated.
Found a copy of Windows 7 Pro at work (Same OS on my M15x). Can I use this disk to do a fresh install still and just use the key pasted to the bottom of my laptop? Also, This particular disk was rolled out in 2011 and my laptop was purchased in 2010.

There is no reason why you could not load the Win 7 Pro onto your laptop. Just means that you would have a later version of Windows than what was on the laptop in the first place.
HOWEVER, you have one major problem. The serial or key that is pasted under your laptop is unique to the original version of Windows that was on the laptop in the first instance and will not work with the Win 7 Pro. You may be able to go to Microsoft and plead a "Lost Key". Don't hold your breath though

Had a similar situation with my M17x-R4 18 months ago. Everything I tried refused to work. In the end I installed a new hard drive and did a complete fresh install of my own copy of windows. I then downloaded Respawn and re-installed it. I then purchased the premium version. Its not the ideal solution but it stops the frustration. I have since had to do a complete recovery and it worked a dream.
Not much of a help but me thinks best solution. Pedro21
