Graphics/Display Issue
I have an M17x-R2 with 2 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 Graphics cards installed, recently I have started to have an issue with the display, when I first start the PC windows loads as normal but the graphics goes to a black screen as Windows is loading. I have to reboot up to 3 times before the display works normally, however once the display is working normally I do not appear to have an issues.
I have used drive sweeper to remove the ATI driver and reinstalled the one from the Dell Site and no change.
I have noticed that when I am playing some games the temperature of the case near the Num Pad light gets hot and when I checked with HWiNFO64 it shows that the maximum temperature of the GPU reached 102C
That 102c is going to be a problem. That is high. The black screen on boot could be just a driver issue. I would also think that on boot the GPU is not even close to that 102c so that can't be it.
But even if that 102c is not the cause of the black screen on boot it still needs to be fixed asap before you damage something. I would start with drivers if it was me. Try to fix the black screen and the fan may not be working right for all we know and it could be the driver. Would be nice if a driver reinstall fixed both issues. I would see if there is a BIOS update for the GPU too.
Being its a laptop and ATI im a little out of my comfort zone here but thats what I would do. From there I would call Dell. I had the m17 and truth be told..I couldnt stand it. Sold it like 8 months ago and got a little Mini 1012 netbook off the refurb site..with discounts I payed $25 for it when all was said and done. Love the thing. Has TV,Crystal HD and lasts all day on battery. Can't game on it but I like the trade off.

That tempature seems extreme. I'm running ATI HD5970 which are some of the hotest cards by ATI. the shutdown temp is about 95C.
Have you tried canned air to blow out the heatsink?
