Go to SolutionLaptop graphic issue
Hi there. I'm posting this on behalf of a friend. They have an Alienware (I believe M17x) and have been having problems with it for a long time now. There are multiple issues.
For starters, the sleep and hibernate options are greyed out. I tried turning them on through command prompt, but it says because VgaSave is installed I cannot enable hibernate/sleep.
Also, I cannot start the computer properly (the Windows logo during startup appears, but afterwards it's just a black screen; the startup sound occurs during the this process, so it's all starting it's just not being displayed). The only way I can start it is by running it in safe mode. In safe mode I can disable the Intel graphics driver, which allows me to then restart and run it in the normal mode (then there's the issue of sleep/hibernate being greyed out).
Both the Intel and NVIDIA drivers are apparently up-to-date.

Hey thanks for your reply, sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. Here's the information:
System Model: M17xR4
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M
Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Hard Drives: What do you mean by hard drives?I'm adding two screenshots, hopefully they help.
This one is a screenshot of the device manager. I'm not sure what the Unknown devices under Other Devices are, not sure if that's relevant. The Intel driver is disabled because that's the only way the laptop will display a screen.
This one is of the display tab of dxdiag, not sure why it's not displaying anything.

Hi.
First thing I would do is completely uninstall the Intel graphics driver and NVidia graphics driver.
Restart after uninstallation and download/run driversweeper to remove and leftover driver fragments
http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4266-driver-sweeper.html
Download the Intel graphics driver from the Dell website and the latest NVidia driver from theirs.
http://www.dell.com/support/home/au/en/audhs1/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=M38YW
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Install the Intel driver and restart.
Install the NVidia driver and restart.
You also have two unidentified devices in your device manager, if one of these is a chipset or PCIE driver it could be interfering with the graphics drivers ability to function correctly
If this does not fix the issue then a full re-installation of the OS and all drivers would be my next recommendation before you write the laptop off or pay for repairs.
