still confused about overclocking

I ordered an r4 overclocked to 4.1. Posts below, and also under the Dell website with documents on the R4 suggest that this overclocking is intermittent, not constant.

Other manufactures  factory overclock to 4.5 or higher like Origin. Is their overclocking intermittent as well or present 100% of the time?

I would  guess that constant vs intermittent would make a big difference in performance on gaming.

Also I see now that the R4 is offered with ALX or standard chassis. When I purchased only the ALX chassis was avaiable. I looked at the website but cannot see why one would choose one over the other. Any thoughts there would be appeciated.

Thanks

Yeah I was confused about the ALX and Standard Chassis. Someone on this forum explained it to me.  the ALX has an interior lighting system so when you open it up it lights up for you and you also get active venting and you get those fin-like things on top. The standard doesn't come with those fins I am also led to believe that it doesn't come with the interior lights either. It's also worth noting that the ALX comes with the ability to slide in hard drives while the standrd comes with wired hard drives.  it's practically all about aesthetics really.

As for overclocking. I'm not even sure what overclocking really does. I think it makes your PC Gaming experience better, but I'm not sure if I'm honest.

Dell Uk only offered Aurora as Micro ALX which I assumed was standard for the model? Never thought there was a full ALX chassis?? I figured that was where the Area 51 stood.

Anyway OC in the R4 is idle in CPU-ID at 1200 MHZ. But once I overclocked myself it went up to 4200.1 when called upon from certain applications.  Adobe premier was a good example of a cpu hog.   You'll not see your CPU remain at 4GHZ all of the time.

Infact if you ordered the 4ghz chip then its likely itll only fetch speeds 3900MHZ max. I had a long discussion with an AW tech about this. I ended up getting the settings for 4.2 saving the extra £400 (GBP) It really is as much as just changing a number in the bios settings.

Do check out the current issue with the R4 failing to boot on an oc'd CPU at present however. I have had to revert to Stock speeds untill Dell find a solution.

Zonker  Dell are having major problems with ll the latest range.  check the X51 threads too.  A real disappointment.

Whoa! Dell still has the boot issue on OC'ed CPUs? All of Dell's Aurora systems come with overclocking standard. You would think it would be a top priority to fix and/or they wouldn't be shipping all R4's with overclocking. Time for me to try and find that thread again.

Well shiver me timbers I see this now. Guess I was lucky choosing the default ALX chassis.

Ok nice link , but I dont see that on the UK site at least.  I think I had been getting my wires crossed.  The standard chassis is the pepperpot design correct?
