2nd PC connection problems
Dear Dell Sorry about the previous messages it would not accept my paste.
I have a Dell Dimension 5100 linked to a Sitecom router by a 1 metre cable I have tried to connect another Dell Dimension again by a longer cable via the router However i cannot access the internet on the pc at the end of the long cable. The router recognises both . I have changed the cable, swapped the pcs around Changed IPs but still cannot access internet. On the properties it shows connected but limited?? Can you help please Nigel

1 Meter is too short. There is a Minimum Length for CAT5 cables. The short cable could be causing issues.
You did not say what kind of cables, You did not say which exact model router. If this is a router you should not need to manually change IP addresses. DSL requires a PPPOE connection.

We have run a Cat5 cable from the router through the house to another room This we have done twice We have swapped pcs around and they work on the short cable but not when connected to the longer?? We have treble checked the cable and all connections are ok The Router is a sitecom WL 322 that identifies the pcs and is working fine. We have tried altering the IPs without success

Dear Muto The Router is a WL 322 I HAVE BROUGHT THE SECOND COMPUTER DOWNSTAIRS AND CONNECTED IT WITH A SHORT CABLE AND BOTH PCS ARE ABLE TO ACCESS THE WEB BUT WILL NOT CONNECT ON THE LONGER CABLE??? The CABLE HAS BEEN CHECKED AND IS CORRECT. ONE PC HAS IP MANUALLY CONFIGURE THE OTHER STATES IP OBTAINS AUTOMATICALLY. I AM NOT USING THEM AS SERVERS JUST PCS ?? Nigel

The WL322 is a Wireless Router. What is connected to the Grey WAN connection?
Wired machines should only be attached to the yellow ports.
Cat5 is PAIRS. You cannot use flat wire you must use twisted PAIRS meaning 1 2 3 then 6
The wire must NOT be Shielded.
CAT 5 cable will support 10/100 Ethernet. That is, Ethernet and Fast Ethernet. CAT 5e cable will support Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet. CAT 5e Cable is completely backwards compatible, and can be used in any application in which you would normally use CAT 5 cable.
Cat 3 cable is 10 meg Ethernet only cable.
