4 beeps

For the past month and a half, my XPS R450 has froze/locked up several times and failed to reboot until I waited an extended period (to cool off?).  The fan would work, the power button would light up, the hard drive would start spinning and the cd drive would power on but no video, no POST, no floppy drive access, no beeps.

This week, the XPS locked up one last time and now won't boot at all.  I'm now getting 4 beeps instead when I turn it on.  Still get fan, hard drive spin, cd drive power on but no video, no floppy drive access.  Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?

    bzt,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Since you only mention 4 beeps and no others. Take a look at the chart and listed to the sequence of beeps to determine what is wrong.Let me know what the sequence it after looking at the chart.

POST Beep Codes: Dell™ Dimension™ XPS Rxxx Systems

If the monitor cannot display error messages during POST, the computer may emit a series of beeps that identifies the problem or that identifies a faulty component or assembly. The table below lists the beep codes that may be generated during POST.

1-2-2-3 BIOS ROM checksum error Obtain technical assistance from Dell.

1-3-1-3 8742 keyboard controller error Reseat the keyboard connector.
1-3-3-1 Memory defective or not present Reseat the DIMMs.
1-3-4-1 RAM failure on line xxx Reseat the DIMMs.
1-3-4-3 RAM failure on data bits xxx of low byte on memory bus Reseat the DIMMs.

    Hello bzt .

I recommend you to run Dell Diags to see what is happening.

    Regards.

I should have run the Dell Diags while it still worked most of the time. :-)  Unfortunately, it now won't boot whether warm or cold.  I'm hoping its behavior before the XPS R450 totally died will give some clues on what the problem is.

Thanks for the reply.  According to http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1011727

4 beeps = This indicates a non-functional timer. This indicates a problem with the motherboard.

I'm not sure how to approach fixing this.
