Put the CD in the drive. Restart the computer. When you see the dell blue logo press f12. Choose boot to IDE CD rom (or the equavalent). When it says press any key to boot from cd. Press enter (or any key).

    Follow the on screen prompts.

You use the following instructions for reinstalling XP in a D8400

     http://www.djdenham.com/Install%20Procedures.htm

     http://www.djdenham.com/8400%20Special.htm

There's a PC System Restore utility on the hard drive, that will restore the system to it's factory condition

Thank You all.  I believe I read somewhere that the "PC System Restore Utility" can only be used once as the HD is rewritten.  Is that correct?

Also:  FYI:   I called Dell Technical Support at 1-800-915-3355 and spoke with a technician who created a "Utilities and Drivers" CD specific to my 8400.  I am supposed to receive it in 3-5 business days along with an "Applications" CD which will enable me to do a clean install without using the 'PC System Restore Utility"
