Black screen again

How do I get my son's computer to get back to starting up with Windows XP normally?
I want the option for "Last Known Good Configuration".
He has Windows Home. Dell Dimensio 4550
Thanks!

If the system boots up and runs correctly, with the printer disconnected, then, yes, the printer is the problem.

Maybe you need to update or reinstall the printer's drivers.

    Hello again.
I went over to fix son's computer. I thought everything was working just fine. I got to the Last Known Configuration. Then I restarted and plugged in the printer and XP started up like it was suppose to. Even the two CD's doors would open.

Now later after I left his house it was turned off. Then they started it up again and the screen came back black with the same readings.
    Two questions please.

When I unnplugged the Prtiner Windows would start up ok and both the CD's door would open. Could the Prtiner be the problem?

Should I do the Dell Diagnostics? If so, it is easy to do?

Has anyone else have a solution?

    Thanks for the help.
I was going to uninstall the printer and then reinstall it. But what you have said about updating the drivers sounds like a good idea. How do I do that? Is it easy?

You need to go to the printer's manufacturer's site and check for updates.

A more suitable board for printer problems would be "Printers" forum, in the leaft panel.

Ok I went over to son's house last night. His problem is strange to me.
After I tried everything last time I was there, things were working right so I thought. His wife turned the computer back on and got the same black screen so they pressed the F1 key and windows started right up. Then she used the printer and printed up a few things.
    Then she shut down.

Last night I got the computer to get into the "Last Known Configuration". with printer plugged in. DVD door opens but not CD-Rom door. You still can't open it. So I turned off computer and unplugged from printer both USB and Main cable.
Now it starts up like it should with both doors opening.

I was going to do what you said to the printer's driver but for now they can't find their CD that goes to the printer. I was going to uninstall printer then re-install. So I suggested to buy a new printer. It is hard to believe it is the printer that is causing this problem.

So there you have it. What do you think?
