- Go here http://www.djdenham.com/Scandisk_text.htm for instructions on scandisk and defrag.
Set both to automatically fix errors.
Defragmenting can help, but it depends on how much file fragmentation you have when you start to defrag. The more fragmentation you have the greater the performance improvement.
These maintenance items should be done at regular itervals to keep your pc in tip top shape.
My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves me completely

Ad-Aware - The best Defrag problem is Diskeeper version 7.0 workstation version. Defragging does improve the hard drive performance. What version of Windows are you running? Diskeeper 7.0 can run on Windows 98SE to Windows XP. I have been using this product for years. It out performs Nortom speedisk.

i know the defragger will start over if you have applications running in the background that access the drive and so forth. make sure to close any applications before hand including the ones in the lower right corner that stay resident. right click on each one and close any programs that you can.
I wouldn't sweat it too much, defragging does not improve performance as much as you think :p
