DVD Rom drive problems

I have an Inspiron 8600. the DVD drive has been acting strange by randomly opening with a mind of it's own. Now it won't read any disc. I have tried removing the removable drive and reinserting it but nothing. When I insert a disc the green light does blink on and off for a bit but then nothing. And suggestions are appreciated as I can't really afford a new DVD ROM drive.

Thank you.

First, this is the DESKTOP hardware section, there is a separate section for LAPTOPS.  However there is also a separate section just for Disk Drive problems, including CD/DVD problems and probably where you should have posted.

The status in the Device Manager may help with problem isolation.  Actually uninstalling the Drive in the Device Manager then restarting the PC (and Windows will detect and reinstall) fixes a lot of problems.  To access the Device Manager, hold down the Windows key and press the Pause/Break key.  Depending on what Operating System you have, the next panel will have a link to the Device Manager.  RIGHT click on the entry for the CD Drive and the LEFT click on Uninstall.  Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will be detected and reinstalled.   If this does not fix it, repost on the Disk Drive section  HERE.  Along with your PC Model number always include your Operating System Version on ANY initial problem post.
