This is normal behavior on boot, mine does it too.

I have an E520 that's a few weeks old now. From day one, when I power it up the CPU cooling fan sounds like it starts at full speed but within 1-2 seconds it slows down to a whisper. I think that this normal behavior. Actually, the more I think about it, it seems like a good idea. Especially when the fan starts to wear out (many, many moons from now I'm sure). The kickstart at power-on would give a sticky fan the just the nudge it needs to start spinning...:smileywink:

A more reasonable probability is that when the pc powers up the fan has power applied but is not yet controlled by whatever temperature sensing scheme Dell has designed, and that within a second or two the system checks CPU temperature and pulls the fan down to slow speed.

    Just my speculations, of course...

Run Dell diagnostics extended test on the system. Reboot the computer, when the Dell logo appears, press F12 immediately, highlight the "Boot to Utility" Partition, then "Enter", and choose the "Extended" test.
For more information on using diagnostics, check out page 50 of your E520 owner's manual.

My E520 also does that on startup. I think it's normal. What isnt normal is when my computer freezes all of a sudden and the fan spins REAL fast. I unplug the PC and turn it back on and it's fine. It's done it about 3 times since I bought the PC a month ago.
