MiMence03,
Yes, I am aware your system is a desktop model.
And yes, there is a battery on the motherboard inside your desktop tower. Did you click on the link regarding the battery in my previous response? The link would have shown you that your desktop does indeed have a small battery inside.
And yes, you can run those test I described at any time as they will not destroy any data on the system.
MiMence03,
Your model lacks the diagnostic lights which can be useful in resolving problems. Without any additional error messages about the only way to resolve the problem you are experiencing is through a little trial and error. Given the age of the system I would first suggest replacing the battery on the motherboard. If this battery is failing it may have caused your system to lose the hardware configuration settings which resulted in the system not finding the hard drive. A new 3-Volt, CR2032, coin cell battery can be purchased for around $3 (US) and is available at any Radio Shack, computer stores and most discount stores like Wal-Mart. You can click here for additional information on how to change the battery from your model's on-line Service Manual.
If the battery replacement doesn't work then try the quick 90/90 hard drive test which should be supported on your model. When you see the Dell splash screen press the + + keys together. The system will run a quick test on the hard drive and give it a pass or fail rating. If you have the Dell Resource CD that came with your system, I would recommend running the more extensive tests on your system especially on the hard drive. If all else fails, try disconnecting the hard drive to see if the system will boot to a floppy disk or bootable CD. If it does then suspect a hard drive failure.
MiMence03,
About the only other thing I can suggest is open up your system and disconnect the hard drive to see if the system will boot up to a bootable floppy disk or a bootable CD. If your hard drive has failed it will keep your system from starting up.
