High CPU usage

I just recently had a hard drive die on me so I bought a new 160 gb maxtor ata133 hard drive and reinstalled Win XP pro.  Now I've got everything back up and running, but I'm having quite a bit of trouble with high CPU usage.  It's pretty low when it's idle, but whenever I use basically any program it spikes up high and hangs the system for a second.  It particularly bothers me when I'm listening to music on Winamp or any other player because it makes the music basically skip.  It even spikes up to 100% when I push the back button on internet explorer.  Before I got the new hard drive and reinstalled windows it never was that high before.  Strange...

    ukswimmer10,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

How many programs are running in the background that are using the cpu? To see the list or programs and to stop some of the programs you can press CTRL | ALT | DELETE at the same time. You then can click on task manager to see the list of running programs.

I've checked it quite a few times.  I have like 32 processes running.  Right now the cpu usage is like around 100% and like anywhere from 90 - 99% is being used by grab-it which is downloading stuff from newsgroups.  I've used this program before I had to totally reinstall windows and it never used this much of my cpu processes before.  I've got a 1.9 ghz processor and 512 mb of ram.  My ram right now is at like 160 mb not being used.  I know that this one program should not use that much of my cpu, but how can I fix that.

    Thanks,

    Evan

I'm having the same problem too!  When I'm loading something 100% usage is indicated but when it sits there and I'm not doing much to the pc it's down to 0-5%.  Can someone please explain?  I have around 30-35 processes opened.

    Thanks,

    Anne

Hi, I was looking around the forum and noticed that the you seem to be experiencing the same problems I am with my CPU.  My task mangager shows that when my CPU is Idle or the program I am using is idle the usage is around 0-5%.  However, if I open a program or execute a command on any program, the usage spikes up dramatically anywhere from 40% to even the high 90%.  I've noticed that when I browse through pages on my Internet Explorer, simply going back or forward can sometimes cause my CPU Usage to spike up to a full 100%.  And yes, this is even on harmless websites such as this forum.  Did you ever find a solution to this problem?  If not, is there anyone else that has experienced similar problems with their CPU and can offer some advice, suggestions, or help to remedy this problem.

Also, I have been experiencing some problems with either one or both of my fans.  They make a terribly loud noise upon startup that dissapates after about being on for about an hour.  However, if I leave my computer idle, the fan noises sound off again.  I've read numerous reports of people experiencing similar problems and just wanted a more current answer on this problem.  My hope is that it is just dirt and dust collected.  If so can anyone help walk me through removing the fans in my CPU so I can clean them.  It has a green encasing covering them.

Thanks for listening and hope to hear from someone soon on these problems.

I had the same problem start up on me this past weekend.  I made no configuration changes whatsover to my pc, and even tried using msconfig to turn off everything.  Any internet related application makes the cpu usuage go up to 100% and redline.  Even opening basic XP windows related applications.

I worked with Dell Tech Support last night, and pretty much they had no answer or idea.  I started backing up what I could last night, and probably will reformat the entire HD and start from scratch tonight.

Tried googling a few different topics, I've seen issues with Multi-Card readers and AVI incompatibility.  That wasn't the case with mine.  Also, no traces of active spy/adware or viruses in the pc.

    Any clues?

    Thanks,
    Rob S.
