Memory Test Failure
Recently, I had many problems with my Dell Dimension 8400. Certain programs constantly crash unexpectedly (eg firefox), almost no programs can be installed due to some corruption (even from reputable sites like CNET), and many programs are unable to function properly eg Avast's on-access protection cannot be turned on. I have already checked using Antivirus software and Hijackthis, and no viruses were found. Also, I occasionally get a BSOD citing some problem with the NTFS.
Trying to conduct a system restore failed, and so I ran the diagnostics under that symptom.
The following failures were obtained:
- System Memory - Data Bus Stress
- System Memory - MATS
- System Memory - March A Test
- System Memory - March B Test
- System Memory - March C Test
- System Memory - March X Test
- System Memory - March Y Test
I received the following errors:
- 2F00:0B13
- 2F2F:0119
- 2F2F:0419
- 2F2F:0819
- 2F2F:0719
- 2F2F:0919
- 2F2F:0A19
- 2F2F:0B1C
Does this mean that one or more of my computer's hardware is faulty? If so, is the only way to fix this problem to replace the relevant parts? My computer's warranty has expired, so do I have to renew it?

Sorry, what is a 'module' and 'socket'? I'm not technologically inclined so perhaps you could clarify. If it involves opening up the computer to do fixes, I doubt I will be able to do that.

A 'Module' refers to the memory, aka 'Memory Module.
'Socket' refers to the slot, [aka DIMM Connector], that the memory module is install into.
Yes, you will need to open the case to perform the procedure.

opening a computer case is not "brain surgery" or "rocket science" ! :)
if you are careful and stay calm/focused/confident, it should be fairly easy (unless you have major dexterity limitations).
please let the forum know if something is confusing, or unclear.
"module" = the actual memory "chip".

"socket" is the slot on the "main board" that the module/chip fits into.

I will look into that and see what I can do
I think that if you had a "hands on" demonstration of opening the computer case and putting a memory module into a socket, you would be very surpirised how easy it is.
far easier than say, making a good batch of chocolate chip cookies or fixing a flat bicycle inner tube.

If you have any doubt about your capabilities to check the memory, take the PC to a local computer repair shop and have them check it for you.

Thank you both for the detailed problem description and the focused response! I encountered the same problem with my Dimension 8400 (except I had random Blue Screen of Death as well) and resolved it thanks to you folks.

I'm having the same problem with my dell inspiration 1525 laptop. Is it the same solution? How would I go about opening this puppy up if I need to? Side note any tips or pointers as to getting to know my CPU better? I'm starting college and I know I would enjoy learning about the CPU world and having more hands on experience to strengthen my conflict resolution when it comes to CPU issues, thanks folks.

Take note of which module failed, and move it to the other socket. If the error follows the memory module, replace the module with a new one. If the error occurs in the same socket with the other module (i.e., doesn't follow) it's the memory socket that's faulty and the mainboard will need to be replaced.
